Salience Network
The brain system that decides which signals matter. Cold strengthens its link to the prefrontal cortex.
Every second, the brain is flooded with more signals than it can act on. The salience network is the traffic controller that decides which ones matter, routing attention toward what is urgent and away from what is noise. It sits at the switch between the brain's inward, wandering mode and its focused, task-facing one.
Cold appears to tune that switch. In an fMRI study of thirty-three people, cold-water immersion raised the functional connectivity between the medial prefrontal cortex, the seat of deliberate control, and the salience network. In plain terms, the part of the brain that plans and the part that decides what deserves attention started talking more.
This is a plausible piece of why people describe cold as mentally clarifying rather than just bracing. The signal it sends is impossible to ignore, and in being impossible to ignore it seems to leave the attention system better organized for a while after.
