Vasoconstriction & Vasodilation

The vessels narrowing and widening. Heat opens them, cold clamps them shut, and the swing between the two is the engine of contrast.

Your blood vessels are not passive pipes. They are muscular, and they are always adjusting their width to move blood where the body needs it. Vasodilation is the widening; vasoconstriction is the narrowing. Together they are how the body manages heat, pressure, and flow minute to minute.

Temperature drives them hard in opposite directions. Heat opens the vessels, pulling warm blood to the skin to shed it, which is why a sauna leaves you flushed. Cold clamps them shut, pulling blood inward to protect the core, which is why the skin pales and the surface goes numb. The swing between the two is the whole mechanical event of contrast therapy.

Trained repeatedly, that swing is itself a kind of exercise for the vascular system, a rhythmic open-and-close that keeps the vessels responsive. The alternation is not a side effect of heat and cold. It is much of the point.
