Heart Rate Variability

The beat-to-beat variation in heart rhythm. Higher resting HRV tracks with calm, flexibility, and sharper thinking.

A healthy heart is not a metronome. The interval between beats varies slightly, moment to moment, and that variation is heart rate variability. Counterintuitively, more variability is the good sign. It means the vagus nerve is actively shaping each beat, and the system is free to speed up and slow down as conditions change.

Higher resting HRV tracks with calm, emotional flexibility, and sharper thinking. The neurovisceral integration model treats it as a readable marker of how well the brain and heart are cooperating, a proxy for the capacity to regulate under load. Low, rigid HRV points the other way, toward a body stuck in defense.

A word of honesty on the numbers. HRV responds to sleep, stress, and training, but the effect of any single practice is easy to overstate. In one controlled trial, adding a post-exercise sauna produced no HRV gain over exercise alone. It is best read as a slow trend line for the whole nervous system, not a scoreboard for yesterday's session.
