Core Body Temperature

The body's internal thermostat. Sleep begins when it falls, which is why the cooldown after heat, not the heat itself, is what helps you sleep.

Core body temperature is the tightly defended reading of your internal organs, held near 37°C and swinging on a daily rhythm of about a degree. It peaks in the early evening and falls through the night, and that fall is not a side effect of sleep. It is closer to the trigger.

Sleep pressure rises as core temperature drops. This is why the useful move is counterintuitive: the sauna does not help you sleep by warming you. It helps by forcing a steep rebound. Heat drives core temperature up, and when you leave, the body overcorrects and drops it faster and lower than it would on its own. In Finnish sleep research, an evening sauna raised slow-wave sleep in the first hours of the night through exactly this accelerated cooldown.

The lesson is about timing, not intensity. It is the cooldown after heat, the falling edge, that carries the sleep benefit. Cutting the session short to chase the cold too soon can cut that benefit with it.
