Co-regulation

How one settled nervous system steadies another. The body does some of its hardest work in the presence of calm others.

Co-regulation is the quiet fact that nervous systems settle each other. We tend to picture calm as something you generate alone, by breathing or thinking your way down. But the older, cheaper route runs through other people. A settled body near yours lowers the metabolic cost of staying regulated.

The evidence is physical, not sentimental. Holding the hand of a trusted person measurably reduces the brain's threat response, which is the observation at the heart of Social Baseline Theory: the brain treats a companion as a resource and spends less of its own energy on vigilance. Distress, too, is contagious, watching someone under stress can raise your own cortisol.

This reframes what a shared room is for. When people go through heat and cold together in silence, the presence of calm others is doing some of the regulating. The nervous system does its hardest work more easily when it is not doing it alone. See The Nervous System Is Social.
