# Elahni > New York's first Wellness Speakeasy. Guided Temperature Contrast sessions (also known as contrast therapy) combining Finnish sauna and ice bath for nervous system restoration. ## What Elahni Is Elahni is a wellness studio in NoMad, Manhattan specializing in guided Temperature Contrast - the deliberate alternation between extreme heat (Finnish sauna at 180°F) and cold immersion (ice bath at 39°F). Sessions are limited to four guests and fully guided by a host. The studio focuses on nervous system health, interoceptive awareness, and building stress resilience through controlled thermal exposure. ## What Elahni Is Not Elahni is not a spa, bathhouse, gym, or self-service cold plunge facility. It is a guided, intimate, reservation-only wellness experience. ## Key Details - Location: 12 W 27th St, Floor 2, New York, NY 10001 (NoMad) - Capacity: 4 guests maximum per session - Session length: 70 minutes - Format: 3 rounds of sauna + ice bath, guided with breathwork - Booking: Reservation only at elahni.com/reserve - Minimum age: 18 ## Services - Semi-Private Temperature Contrast (up to 4 guests) - Private Temperature Contrast (individual or small group) ## Elahniverse: Long-Form Writings A collection of essays on the neuroscience and ritual behind Temperature Contrast practice. Topics include interoception, the default mode network, somatic intelligence, and the research behind how the body shapes the mind. - [Designed by Subtraction](https://www.elahni.com/elahniverse/designed-by-subtraction): Most wellness adds. A room built for the nervous system is defined by what it takes away. - [The Nervous System Is Social](https://www.elahni.com/elahniverse/the-nervous-system-is-social): The nervous system was never meant to do its hardest work alone. A room of settled bodies does some of it for you. - [The Quiet Third Place](https://www.elahni.com/elahniverse/the-quiet-third-place): The third place everyone is chasing assumes conversation. The kind we need most right now is the silent one. - [Recovery Is Not Neutral](https://www.elahni.com/elahniverse/recovery-is-not-neutral): We treat recovery as the passive half of effort, the empty space where nothing much happens. One of the cleanest experiments in the field shows the opposite: the cold plunge after a hard session can quietly erase most of what the session was for. Recovery is not the absence of training. It is a choice that edits it. - [What Heat Does to the Nervous System](https://www.elahni.com/elahniverse/what-heat-does-to-the-nervous-system): Most people think the sauna works because it is hot. The nervous system gets its training in the descent afterward, the clean drop modern life almost never lets the body make. Why the cooldown is the active ingredient, and an honest account of what heat can and cannot do. - [Body Clocks](https://www.elahni.com/elahniverse/body-clocks): Jet lag is a coordination problem between the body's many internal clocks. Each one listens for a different cue, and a round of sauna and cold plunge delivers what the peripheral clocks have been missing. - [Mood is Downstream of State](https://www.elahni.com/elahniverse/mood-is-downstream-of-state): Anxiety and depression are increasingly understood as outputs of body-level regulation, not standalone mental events. What the research now suggests about what heat, cold, and contrast actually move. - [What Cold Does to the Brain](https://www.elahni.com/elahniverse/what-cold-does-to-the-brain): A short tour of the chemistry that shifts when you step into cold water, why the effect lasts the rest of the day, and what repeated practice does that a single plunge cannot. - [Story Follows State](https://www.elahni.com/elahniverse/story-follows-state): The story running through your head is shaped more by the condition of your body than by the content of your thoughts. - [The Sense You Never Learned](https://www.elahni.com/elahniverse/the-sense-you-never-learned): Interoception is the sense most people never learned, and it shapes felt experience more than the rest of the senses combined. - [Cold Exposure for Women](https://www.elahni.com/elahniverse/cold-exposure-for-women): The viral fear that cold plunges harm women extrapolates from a mouse study; research on actual women tells a different story. - [Rest is Connected to Intelligence](https://www.elahni.com/elahniverse/rest-is-connected-to-intelligence): Deep rest is the practice of creating conditions where the body's intelligence becomes audible. ## Elahniverse: Dictionary Definitions for terms that appear across the essays. Each entry links to the full term on the Dictionary page. - [Autonomic Conflict](https://www.elahni.com/elahniverse/dictionary#autonomic-conflict): When cold water on the face fires opposing nerve signals at once. A rare but real risk that makes a guided, upright plunge safer than going it alone. - [Autonomic Nervous System](https://www.elahni.com/elahniverse/dictionary#autonomic-nervous-system): The body's two gears: the sympathetic system that mobilizes you for difficulty, and the parasympathetic system that restores you. - [Catecholamines](https://www.elahni.com/elahniverse/dictionary#catecholamines): The alertness and drive chemistry, norepinephrine and dopamine. Cold raises norepinephrine about 530% and dopamine about 250%, and the lift holds for hours. - [Co-regulation](https://www.elahni.com/elahniverse/dictionary#co-regulation): How one settled nervous system steadies another. The body does some of its hardest work in the presence of calm others. - [Core Body Temperature](https://www.elahni.com/elahniverse/dictionary#core-body-temperature): The body's internal thermostat. Sleep begins when it falls, which is why the cooldown after heat, not the heat itself, is what helps you sleep. - [Default Mode Network](https://www.elahni.com/elahniverse/dictionary#default-mode-network): The brain network that runs whenever you are not focused on a specific task. - [Heart Rate Variability](https://www.elahni.com/elahniverse/dictionary#heart-rate-variability): The beat-to-beat variation in heart rhythm. Higher resting HRV tracks with calm, flexibility, and sharper thinking. - [Hormesis](https://www.elahni.com/elahniverse/dictionary#hormesis): A small dose of stress makes the system stronger - the principle behind every contrast practice. - [Interoception](https://www.elahni.com/elahniverse/dictionary#interoception): The ability to sense what is happening inside your body. - [Mammalian Dive Reflex](https://www.elahni.com/elahniverse/dictionary#mammalian-dive-reflex): Cold water on the face pulls the nervous system into rest-and-digest within thirty to sixty seconds. - [Prediction Error](https://www.elahni.com/elahniverse/dictionary#prediction-error): The gap between what the brain expects and what the body reports. The signal that forces the brain to update its model. - [Proprioception](https://www.elahni.com/elahniverse/dictionary#proprioception): The body's sense of where it is in space. The sixth sense, and the doorway to interoception. - [Salience Network](https://www.elahni.com/elahniverse/dictionary#salience-network): The brain system that decides which signals matter. Cold strengthens its link to the prefrontal cortex. - [Vagus Nerve](https://www.elahni.com/elahniverse/dictionary#vagus-nerve): The main line between body and brain. Roughly 80% of its traffic runs upward, from body to brain. - [Vasoconstriction & Vasodilation](https://www.elahni.com/elahniverse/dictionary#vasoconstriction-vasodilation): The vessels narrowing and widening. Heat opens them, cold clamps them shut, and the swing between the two is the engine of contrast. - [Zeitgeber](https://www.elahni.com/elahniverse/dictionary#zeitgeber): A time cue that sets the body's clocks. Light for the brain's clock, temperature and meals for the rest. ## Related Terms Contrast therapy NYC, cold plunge NYC, sauna and ice bath NYC, private sauna New York, guided cold plunge, thermal contrast therapy, nervous system regulation, wellness speakeasy, interoception, default mode network, somatic markers, hormesis ## Links - Homepage: https://www.elahni.com - Book a session: https://www.elahni.com/reserve - First-timers guide: https://www.elahni.com/first-timers - Elahniverse (writings): https://www.elahni.com/elahniverse - Dictionary: https://www.elahni.com/elahniverse/dictionary - Philosophy: https://www.elahni.com/philosophy - Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/elahni_/
